Urumqi Massacre Film

On July 5, 2009 in Urumqi, the capital of occupied East Turkistan, thousands of Uyghur demonstrators marched to the People’s Square, demanding justice for thee wrongfully murdered Uyghur factory workers and respect for their basic human rights. However, the ruling Chinese government responded with immediate violent repression, firing at unarmed protestors, cutting all communication, and obstructing any reporting in the region.

We produced the following short film commemorating the Urumqi Massacre and released it on the tragic event’s 15th anniversary. The film is based on the testimony of Zumretay Arkin, who witnessed this brutal crackdown while visiting her grandmother in Urumqi at 16 years old, and performed by youth activist Ankar Uyghur.
